The Roots group is all about play! Roots builds on ideas from Montessori, Waldorf education, the history of play based progressive early childhood schools, and studies of Reggio Emilia. We believe strongly in honoring the early childhood years beyond preschool by continuing play based learning for 5, 6, 7 and 8 year old’s in addition to 2, 3 and 4 year old’s. We also believe in multi-age groupings.
Within the Roots group;
- We have story time every day.
- We have thought and continue to think carefully about our space and materials, the layout of the room and how the children can access the materials independently.
- We have a maker center, where kids design and build all kinds of stuff.
- We go on field trips every Month.
- We celebrate the change of seasons!
- Every afternoon we get together for a time to tune in to ourselves and chill out through painting, meditation, writing or handwork.
- We have a BIG sandpit.
Children engage in literacy practices as they create meaning through dramatic play, compose with blocks, or write and draw. Our program values all of these and more equally.
The Roots day has a natural rhythm. It begins at 9:00am and finishes at 4:30pm. Lunch is held at the same time as the Projects groups at 12:30pm and everyone can eat together. There is a story time early afternoon and a wealth of activities on offer for the children throughout the day. Lots of arts and crafts and early learning activities, and the beginnings of maths skills are developed in a hands on way through practical games and play. The week ends with a gratitude circle where the children have the chance to talk about the things that they are grateful for.
When the children are ready they can move into the Projects room for more focused and self directed learning. They then start to make use of the ALC tools. Some children move between the two rooms for different activities throughout the day. The children are welcome to explore and move between the rooms independently at any age.
9:30am Groups and activities with activities on offer from facilitators. The children are welcome to have drinks and snacks as needed throughout the day.
Children bring their own lunch box with no fizzy drinks or chocolate.
